Dr. Jim Garrow: The Spirit of Betrayal

The Spirit of Betrayal

dr-jim-garrowPerhaps the most obvious of those whose lives have shown this spirit and are remembered through history is that of Judas Iscariot, the “trusted” disciple. He had charge of the money that the disciples held in common ( a far cry from communism I might add) and saw to its collection and distribution. Let us not forget that wherever Jesus went there were those who would be driven of necessity to give to his cause whatever the motivations. It was Judas who plotted the “overthrow” of this “lawbreaker” Jesus. His betrayal provided new meaning to a kiss and a new addition to the lexicon of betrayal, the “Judas”.

In modern times there have been others whose actions showed that behind the smiles and the agreements was the hand of betrayal. Quisling is another addition to our vocabulary of infamy from the Second Great War era and has come to mean a betrayer with seditious intent. Where does this spirit spring from? Books are and could be written to explain it, but I wanted to zero in on a warning from scripture that has been on my heart. It is this – “Be careful lest any root of bitterness spring up defiling many”. I believe that it is in this root, this foundational sin/psychosis/spirit that opens the door to greed, envy, strife, wickedness, and the eventual entry of a demonic entity into the life of the individual and then the lives of the victims of the mayhem to come.

Root canals are never fun but are necessary to the excising of poison from the system. It is so dangerous to our very existence that we do all that we can to end the poisons effects before they end in death. Any relationship, any cause, any nation must be rid of the poison for it will have terminal effect on all in the system. I see Mr. Obama as having that spirit of betrayal, filled with the poison that will eventually cause death. It must be eradicated in order for survival to have any hope.
